Travel Insurance for Costa Rica

Travel Insurance for Costa Rica

Costa Rica has started allowing tourists from various countries to visit them. As of November 1, 2020, Costa Rica's borders are open to all international travelers. They have also removed the requirement to present a negative PCR COVID-19 test after arrival in the country. Depending on your vaccination status, the type and level of travel insurance needed might differ. Read below to determine the requirements that apply, and the type of insurance needed for travel to Costa Rica.

For Vaccinated Travelers

As of August 1, 2021, Costa Rica allows entry to tourists fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, or Johnson & Johnson vaccines, as well as minors under 18 years of age, without travel insurance. Visitors from the United States are permitted to present their "COVID-19 vaccination record card" as proof of vaccination.

There are no additional travel insurance requirements for vaccinated travelers and they can buy what they need.

For Unvaccinated Travelers

Those over the age of 18 who cannot present proof of COVID-19 vaccination by the aforementioned vaccines still must purchase travel insurance that meets the following three requirements, as set by the Costa Rica government:

  • Valid for the entire duration of stay in Costa Rica.
  • Coverage in the amount of at least US $50,000 for medical expenses in the case of becoming ill with coronavirus (COVID-19) while in Costa Rica.
  • Minimum coverage of US $2,000 for quarantine lodging expenses required as a result of the COVID-19 illness.

The insurance company must provide a certificate issued in English or Spanish. Purchasing travel insurance from Costa Rican companies is very expensive for no apparent reason. Fortunately, there are several US based products that meet the Costa Rica travel insurance requirements.

There are several compliant travel insurance plans available for unvaccinated travelers depending on residence.

Compliant Travel Insurance for Costa Rica: U.S. Residents

Safe Travels Outbound Provides:

  • Primary medical coverage with policy maximums ranging from $50,000 to $500,000, and covers COVID-19 treatment just like any other new medical condition that occurs after the effective date of the policy.
  • $2,000 in quarantine accommodations ($150/day)
  • You can purchase higher coverage options for an additional price:

    • $4,000 maximum benefits ($300 per day)
    • $7,000 maximum benefits ($500 per day)
  • Trip interruption coverage of up to $7,500.

Compliant Travel Insurance for Costa Rica: Non-U.S. Residents

  • Trip interruption coverage: $7,500

  • You can purchase higher coverage options for an additional price:

    • $4,000 maximum benefits ($300 per day)

Generating Health Pass and QR Code

Once you purchase the insurance, you will receive an email confirmation that has the link to download the visa letter. This visa letter will show the benefits required to enter Costa Rica such as the Travel Delay benefit of at least $2,000 and the Medical Expense benefit of at least $50,000.

You need to upload it to the Costa Rica government website at: https://salud.go.cr.

On Step 4 of the process, you need to select "international". It will ask you:

  • Insurance Coverage Start Date
  • Insurance Coverage End Date
  • Upload insurance file to validate → You upload the visa letter that we provided.

Do not select either of the other two choices listed, where it asks only for the "insurance number".

Once approved by the Costa Rica government, you will be able to download a HealthPass document that contains a QR code from the government website. You will need to show this QR code at the time of travel to be able to enter into Costa Rica.

The visa letter does not have the QR code, and insurance companies are not allowed to generate any.

If not approved in advance, you must go through the "Travel Insurance" stand enabled at the airport upon arrival in Costa Rica to review and validate your travel insurance documentation.
